1. Application Processing Time
General processing time is 6 - 8 weeks minimum. Anything quicker than 6-8 weeks is an exception to the norm.
If a questionnaire is sent, the processing time will generally increase to 3-5 months (this is highly dependent on when the doctor receives the questionnaire and how quickly it is filled out and returned.
If the doctor is VERY prompt it can be quick but that is also an exception.)
The 6-8 week countdown is from the date the application arrived at the tax center (mail room, or upload date) not from the date a status update appears.
2. STATUS UPDATES THAT MAY (or may not) APPEAR ON YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNT
A) “We have received your request.”
This will NOT appear immediately upon uploading your application will not appear until an agent has your application added to their caseload (won’t appear just to indicate it is at the tax center). It will take AT LEAST two weeks (generally, there are not hard and fast rules with CRA) to show this status BUT this status may NEVER appear on your account.
Possible reasons: processing under child’s SIN; agent neglects to enter it into the system; agent is assigned to case and makes a determination immediately if you don’t see this status - DON’T PANIC and DO NOT call Canada Revenue before the 8 week mark.
If you do call Canada Revenue (it can be hard to be patient), be prepared to be told your application has been lost or they have no record of an application being sent.
THIS IS NOT TRUE MOST OF THE TIME in our experience.
Sometimes CRA may actually have information for you especially if the application is being processed under your child’s SIN, it is still best to wait until the 6-8 week mark to call. Sometimes they will be forthcoming and tell you to call after the 8 week mark, no one knows why they tell people their applications are lost, but it is one of the most common falsehoods people are told and one of the most common posts to the group.
B) “We are processing your request.”
This means what it says, they are processing your application it does not mean you’ve been approved or denied it does not mean you’ve been approved and they are calculating payout Sometimes (often but not always), it means they have sent a questionnaire or a request to provide supporting documentation to your doctor (*** this does not mean you should have sent supporting documentation to begin with. Nothing should have been sent but the T2201 - this request is their way of establishing proof of timeline. They use it for dates, not for content.)as with all status updates, this may NEVER appear on your account
I advise you contact your doctor if this status appears on your account, ask they contact you should they receive a questionnaire and that you be present when it is filled out.
C) “You are eligible to claim the disability amount for _____”
You have been approved for the years indicated!!!
D) “You are not eligible to claim the disability amount for ____”
You have been denied :-(
E) “We were unable to determine eligibility for the disability amount” (or similar)
Your doctor was sent a questionnaire or a request for supporting documents and either did not provide the request at all or has missed the 45 day deadline.
Please contact your doctor if this appears on your account.
F) “According to our records, you have never claimed the disability amount”
UNDER DISABILITY TAX CREDIT
Simply means your application has not processed, nothing different will show here until AFTER approval.
